Yeah the typesetting on the cover is a choice… typical to make things gross and edgy for the US audience though.
I don’t think the mangaka was thinking about the US audience at all when he created it. As it was originally a one-off it was a good way to grab audiences and on brand for the short story he created.
I skipped this manga for a long time because it looked like it would be just another abusive relationship fetish bait series that bounces off of foreigner sensibilities. And it is. But after reading Telework I read this series and overall I enjoyed it and am glad to have read it.
I agree with much of what you said where, ignoring the basis for the relationship, it’s a cute manga and it is fun to follow the growth of the two characters and their feelings for each other. To have characters work through their problems in an adult manner and discuss their wants and worries in the open without leaning (for the most part) on the typical manga tropes of misunderstandings or aggressive angst is a rarity and made me invested in the characters and not just the hijinks that ensued.
